No Pavement Cycling campaign begins

The Safer Neighbourhoods Team is about to launch a No Pavement Cycling campaign involving posters, bus-stop ads, flyers and a stop and inform policy leading up to full enforcement including £30 penalty tickets. The campaign will start out with an awareness drive as due to the fact that a shockingly high number of cyclists seem to believe pavement cycling is legal and acceptable.

Community businesses have been praised by PC Gary LeHain as being 100% behind the campaign and for participating in the postering scheme. In the coming weeks the Streatham area will be saturated with information stating pavement cycling is unacceptable and fines will be handed out.

In a related issue it seems our PCSOs will regain their enforcement powers (e.g. hand out tickets, etc.) for offences they witness. Lambeth was the only borough in London in which PCSOs were given no powers of enforcement as a matter of policy. This policy looks set to be reversed in time for the pavement cycling campaign.
